What’s the New Health Connect API From Google and Samsung?
At the I/O 2022 conference, Google revealed the Health Connect Platform APIs and Platform. This allows developers to create health- and fitness-related experiences that consumers can use.
Google’s new Pixel Watch is an intelligent way to get into the fitness market. The company wants to improve health-data synchronization across Android devices to create a more Apple-like experience.
Samsung announced the new Health Connect API to developers in a blog post.
According to the Korean conglomerate, it works with Google and other partners to further develop the platform and realize its full potential.
“We are thrilled that Samsung and Google have collaborated on a new Health Connect solution to meet this need.” TaeJong Jay Yang is Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of the Health R&D Team.
Developers can use the Health Connect API to synchronize health data across devices and applications.
After registering for the experience, developers will be able to compile users’ health data into one encrypted hub.
The users will have complete control over sharing their health information and with whom.
Users will also be able to share their health data with an app, manage linked apps, and modify permission settings.
The information will be synchronized across all their Android devices, including smartwatches, tablets, and smartphones.
According to Samsung, the Health Connect API covers more than 50 data types in many categories, including body measurements, diet, exercise, and sleep.
An open beta version of Health Connect is now available for Android developers. As part of the early access program, Google, Samsung, and other health-focused companies such as MyFitnessPal and Withings collaborate to bring Health Connect functionality to their platforms.
The technology will also be supported by Fitbit and Google Fit devices. Therefore, it should be available worldwide by the time Google releases its Pixel Watch later in the year.
